This unique flawlessly decorated home was designed by its owner, antiques dealer turned interior designer Rose Uniacke, who defined the décor theme as “monastery meets Venetian palazzo.” The house was constructed long ago with impressive proportions, and several incarnations later it has been reimagined as a generous twenty-first-century family home, but one that also blurs the boundaries between stage and sanctuary, professional and private lives.

The house opens into a hallway almost stately in scale: a sweep of stone stairs, a fireplace, a work by Carl Andre posing as a rug.

Tangles of leaves ascend to exposed wooden beams, and an invisible door is painted to match the brickwork. Another door leads into a firelit drawing room furnished with Uniacke’s own curvaceous sofas and chairs, upholstered with Whistler-esque subtlety in a rich palette of stone-colored monochromes balanced by off-white walls and anchored with a black lacquered piano. On the wall, a Gerhard Richter painting of a chandelier is echoed by the ceiling fixture. The effect is spare, sumptuous, and deeply seductive—an otherworldly environment in which contradictions thrive: austere and atmospheric; raw and luxurious; grand and intimate; rigorous and relaxed.

My favorite space here is the dining room. Rustic reclaimed wood floors look cool with stucco and tapestries, and I love a window over the fireplace instead of a traditional mantel. There’s a vintage mirror and an oversized artwork. There’s a mid-century modern coffee table and a shabby rustic one, and a large vintage glam chandelier is a focal point – I adore the way the owner managed to blend such different things in one room!

The common factor of décor is simplicity and strength, natural materials, muted colors, warm textures, and good craftsmanship. The owner created quite a beautiful and delicate space, she mixed old and new, and she has such a great eye for antiques – you can see that in every photo! Get more of these beautiful spaces below!
